How India’s Trade Connect Platform Helps Small Businesses Start Exporting
India’s export target is $2 trillion by 2030. The Trade Connect e-Platform by the Ministry of Commerce gives MSMEs the tools, market research, and expert guidance to start exporting — for free.
India’s export target is ambitious — $2 trillion by 2030. To help small and medium businesses participate in that growth, the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry launched the Trade Connect e-Platform, a single digital hub that simplifies the process of becoming an exporter.
If you’re a manufacturer, dealer, or service provider considering international markets, here’s what you need to know about this platform and how to use it.
What is the Trade Connect e-Platform?
Trade Connect is a digital platform developed by the Ministry of Commerce in partnership with the Ministry of MSME, EXIM Bank, the Department of Financial Services, and the Ministry of External Affairs. It connects over 6 lakh Import Export Code (IEC) holders with 180+ Indian Mission officials and 600+ Export Promotion Council (EPC) officials worldwide.
The platform is free to use and available at trade.gov.in.
What the platform offers
Product and country guides
Detailed market research for specific products in specific countries. Before investing in export infrastructure, you can identify where demand exists for your products, what tariffs apply, and who your competitors are in each market.
Trade agreements and tariff explorer
India has signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with several countries and trading blocs. The tariff explorer helps you understand which agreements apply to your products and how to benefit from reduced duty rates when exporting to those markets.
Global e-commerce guide
Step-by-step guidance on selling your products through international e-commerce platforms like Amazon Global, Alibaba, and eBay. Covers account setup, product listing, shipping logistics, and payment processing for cross-border e-commerce.
EXIM Paathshala
An educational section covering export documentation, customs procedures, shipping logistics, payment terms (LC, DA, DP), and INCOTERMS (FOB, CIF, EXW). Essential reading for first-time exporters who need to understand the paperwork before shipping their first container.
Source From India
A showcase section where Indian businesses can list their products for international buyers to discover. Think of it as a government-backed directory for exporters — similar to what IndiaMART does domestically, but focused on international trade.
Ask an Expert
Direct access to trade professionals and export counsellors who can answer specific questions about your export plans — from documentation requirements to market entry strategies for specific countries.
Who should use this platform
Trade Connect is particularly useful for MSMEs — the small manufacturers and suppliers who make products that are globally competitive but lack the knowledge or connections to sell internationally. If you manufacture any of the following, you likely have export potential:
Industrial components and machinery spare parts. Textile products and garments. Auto parts and engineering goods. Food products and spices. Leather goods. Handicrafts and home furnishings. Pharmaceutical products. Agricultural products.
Indian manufacturers in cities like Coimbatore, Rajkot, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad, and Pune have been exporting for decades. The difference now is that Trade Connect makes the knowledge and connections accessible to smaller businesses that couldn’t afford export consultants.
How to get started
Step 1: Get your IEC (Import Export Code) if you don’t have one. Apply online through the DGFT website — it costs ₹500 and takes 2-3 working days. You need your PAN, Aadhaar, bank account, and GST registration.
Step 2: Register on trade.gov.in with your IEC number.
Step 3: Use the Product and Country Guides to research demand for your products in target markets.
Step 4: Complete the EXIM Paathshala modules to understand export documentation and procedures.
Step 5: Use the Ask an Expert feature to get specific guidance on your first export order.
Government schemes that support new exporters
Beyond Trade Connect, several government schemes provide financial and logistical support for exporters:
RoDTEP (Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products): Refund of embedded central, state, and local taxes on exported goods. Rates vary by product — check the RoDTEP schedule for your HS code.
MEIS replacement schemes: Product-specific export incentives administered through DGFT. Check eligibility for your product category.
ECGC (Export Credit Guarantee Corporation): Insurance against buyer default on export payments. Covers commercial and political risks. Essential for first-time exporters dealing with unknown international buyers.
EXIM Bank credit lines: Subsidised financing for export orders. Available through your bank with EXIM Bank refinancing.
Building your export brand online
Registering on Trade Connect is a strong first step. But international buyers also research suppliers independently — they Google your business name, check your online presence, and look for credibility signals before sending an enquiry.
When a buyer in Dubai or Germany searches for “pneumatic cylinder manufacturer India” or “textile spare parts exporter Coimbatore”, they look for businesses with professional online profiles that show product catalogs, certifications, GST verification, and direct contact information.
A dedicated brand page on a business directory — with your product catalog, export countries, IEC verification, and direct WhatsApp contact — tells international buyers that you’re a real, established exporter. Not just another name on a marketplace.
On LinksIndia.co.in, businesses with export capability get a verified “Exporter” badge alongside their GST verification. Product descriptions are written for international buyers with FOB pricing terms, MOQ details, and compliance certifications prominently displayed.
